I went back to my project I was working on, but the same issues persists.

Ok, I tried an empty project. redering a default cube. it sometimes works, but syncing fails a lot too. problems like partial renders on screen.. I got it working 1 time. I loaded an empty blender project file. with crowdrender enabled, but removed the client pc from client pc Blender nodes. The client instance of Blender listed itself as a node. Perhaps ther should be a check to prevent/guide this setup.
